What is a periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums. Usually painless and can go unnoticed, but often causes bleeding, bone loss and halitosis (bad breath). Many adults lose teeth not only to cavities, but periodontal disease as well. The infection has been associated with risk of heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory disease. It can also be passed down to children. Unsurprisingly, Halitosis (bad breath) could affect your business and social environment.

At Gonzalez Dental Care, our staff is committed to your complete dental health. Every patient’s periodontal health is thoroughly examined at every checkup visit. Our exams include a full assessment of the bone around the teeth, using a dental ruler to measure the space (pockets) between your gums and bone.

Once our exam is complete, our staff will detail the findings to you. Often times patients must undergo a set of appointments to treat their gums. The time period between cleaning/assessment visits is determined by the health of your gums and bone, so striving to achieve and maintain good dental health leads to shorter intervals.

The doctors take a conservative, non-surgical approach to periodontal disease. If you have gingivitis or periodontal disease,  treatment involves deep cleaning — root planning and scaling, with local anesthesia — and antimicrobial therapies. As always, Gonzalez Dental Care uses the latest techniques and equipment to ensure your comfort during these important procedures. Any questions or concerns? Please contact our office!
