What is a Root canal?
A Root Canal is a process in which the dentist removes the “nerve” of the tooth and replaces it with a special material, in order to help patients undergoing deep decay or infections of teeth. Small canals in the roots of teeth contain the dental nerve, which can become infected and inflamed. This infection is usually due to tooth decay or tooth fractures that give bacteria and other microorganisms access to the pulp of the root canals. In these cases, the infected nerve must be removed by a procedure known as Endodontic Therapy; commonly called a root canal. If not treated, the patient could lose the tooth. Stabilization of the tooth is essential to being able save it, along with a crown.
Root canal is a term that seems to stike fear in many people. Through sensitive and skillful administration of anesthetics at Gonzalez Dental Care, we are committed to making root canals completely painless during and after the procedure.

What is a cavity & How can I fix it?
Teeth have a protective layer called enamel. When the enamel weakens due to the acidic by-products created by bacteria, a cavity is formed. Cavities can occur when food gets left in-between teeth, and is not removed with routine brushing and flossing. Basic treatment of a cavity involves cleaingn out the decay and placing a composite filling to close the hole.
However, once the cavity has passed through the enamel and made its way towards the nerve of the tooth, a filling may not be enough. In this case, a Resin filling may not be ideal for the longevity of the tooth due to the cavity destroying too much of the tooth; and a crown is recommended. A crown functions like a hat over the tooth, protecting the dentin and nerve.
